  3.                      STACKING THE HP 95LX PALMTOP COMPUTER

  8.        BACKGROUND
  9.        
  10.        The HP 95LX is a palmtop computer that runs under MS-DOS 3.2. It
  11.        has 1 MB of on-board RAM that is configurable between RAM and
  12.        disk drive. For example, you could use 256 KB of system RAM and
  13.        the remaining 768 KB as the C drive. RAM cards vary in size from
  14.        512 KB to 1.5 MB. You treat them the same as floppy disks. Each
  15.        RAM card has its own battery to maintain the data. A slot on the
  16.        left side of the HP 95LX accepts the RAM cards and is referenced
  17.        as drive A. You'll have to convert this A: RAM card into a
  18.        Stacker drive.
  19.        
  20.        The 95LX Filer/File Transfer Utility allows file copying,
  21.        deleting, etc. It also lets you run applications, gives a shell
  22.        to the DOS prompt, and lets the HP 95LX connect to the serial
  23.        port on a desktop computer using the Connectivity Pack. The
  24.        Connectivity Pack enables you to copy files between the two
  25.        machines. The following procedure involves the use of the Filer
  26.        and Connectivity Pack, but does not give detailed instruction on
  27.        their use. Please refer to the HP 95LX documentation.

  29.                                      Note
  30.                   An external drive made by PAMCO can connect
  31.                   to a desktop machine via the parallel port;
  32.                   this allows a desktop machine to directly
  33.                   access the RAM cards for the HP 95LX. The
  34.                   current device driver for these drives is
  35.                   NOT compatible with Stacker. PAMCO is
  36.                   currently looking into this situation.

  39.        PROCEDURE
  40.        
  41.        You must use a desktop computer for part of this procedure since
  42.        the HP 95LX doesn't have enough RAM to run Setup.
  43.        
  44.         1. On the desktop computer, run Stacker Setup to personalize
  45.             the files and copy them to the hard drive. After this is
  46.             done, press ESCAPE to end Setup without creating a
  47.             compressed drive.
  48.         2. Then type the following command to build an empty Stacker
  49.             drive on the desktop computer:
  50.                     CREATE C:\STACVOL.DSK /S=1.5 /R=4.0 <Enter>
  51.            This will create a 1.5 MB STACVOL file with an anticipated
  52.             compression ratio of 4.0 to 1 to accommodate the high
  53.             compression ratio of Lotus 1-2-3 files. (The /S= specifies
  54.             the size of the RAM card, in MB. The size may vary depending
  55.             on the size of the RAM card.)
  56.         3. Use SATTRIB to remove the hidden, system and read-only
  57.             attributes of the STACVOL file with the following command:
  58.                SATTRIB -R -H -S C:\STACVOL.DSK <Enter>
  59.         4. On the HP 95LX, while in the Filer utility, choose SYSTEM to
  60.             get to a DOS prompt.
  61.         5. Make certain there is no data on the RAM card that is in
  62.             drive A.
  63.         6. At the root directory of drive C on the HP 95LX, add the
  64.             following line to the CONFIG.SYS file:
  65.            DEVICE=C:\STACKER.COM A:
  66.            If there is no CONFIG.SYS file, create one by typing:
  67.                COPY CON CONFIG.SYS <Enter>
  68.                DEVICE=C:\STACKER.COM A: <Enter>
  69.                     <CTRL + Z> <Enter>
  70.         7. Use the Connectivity Pack on the desktop computer and the
  71.             Filer/File Transfer utility on the 95LX to transfer
  72.             STACKER.COM and CHECK.EXE to the root directory of the 95LX.
  73.         8. Transfer STACVOL.DSK from the desktop computer to the RAM
  74.             card in drive A:.
  75.         9. Restart the HP 95LX to load the Stacker device driver.
  76.         10.Stacker drive A mounts automatically whenever the HP 95LX is
  77.            restarted with the compressed RAM card installed.
